“The Customer is always right,” becomes our default thinking when receiving the wrath or addressing the needs of (sometimes) hostile client or customer. The fact that it is not true grinds against our integrity and lays a foundation for an uncomfortable relationship. It may force us into a type of silence where we may fall prey to that person’s venting, will, and assigned meaning. We then think of ourselves as the victim.
If this happens to you, repeat (to yourself three times)… “THE CUSTOMER IS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT, BUT THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS THE CUSTOMER.” This simple shift of thought changes how you see the situation and empowers you to find the place to reconcile a relationship. Furthermore, you get to choose your level of connection with that person. To choose how you respond, ask yourself a few questions. Is it necessary to maintain or restore the relationship? Do you want it to be harmonious? What is the significance of pursuing reconciliation?
Once grasped, this concept frees you from getting drawn into all kinds of vicious circles. It translates into personal situations in terms of he/she may not always be right, but your spouse is always your spouse, the ex will always be your ex-, your mother-in-law will always be your mother-in-law, your sibling will always be your sibling and your jerk boss will be… well, you get the drift.
This week, see where you can make the mental shift and tame those vicious circles in your life.
